I'm always on the lookout for awesome bands, and in the interest of creating conversation on these too silent forums, I propose that we post our favorite bands, what genre of music they fall into, and where we might be able to hear a sample.

I'll start:

  • Sigur Ros – Icelandic ambient dream pop? Very soothing. I can listen to this on the bus while falling asleep, but it's also in constant rotation in both my car and my ipod. You can check them out here: http://www.sigurros.com
  • Royksopp – electronic dance/trance/ambient. They just came out with a new album after years of hiatus. They're one of my all time favorite bands, and you can listen to them here: http://www.royksopp.com
  • The Books – experimental folk. You can find samples of their music all over their website: http://www.thebooksmusic.com
  • Venetian Snares – jungle/drum 'n' bass. I don't normally go for this type of music, but their album Rossz Csillag Alatt Született just blows me away. Listen to the fifth track, Hajnal, for an awesome experience. Their main website is here: http://www.venetiansnares.com I don't know if you can listen to the tracks there, but I think they have a myspace and whatnot where you can.
  • The Mars Volta – progressive rock. Insane guitar riffs and killer beats… And the lyrics sound like something out of a nightmare. I guess each album tells some strange story, and I think I understand some of it, but you glean a bit more with each listen. Definitely worth your time if you haven't heard them already. http://www.themarsvolta.co.uk

I have more favorites, but I'd like to hear yours too!

I'll have to check these bands out! I only know of Royksopp and The Mars Volta, and they're both pretty good!

I'll list some of my current faves in here soon. :)

HEY! I have lots of opinions and no issue sharing them…especially when it comes to music.

I'm a metal-head, so that's the only genre I will be pulling from…

THE LIST!

Leaves' Eyes

A “symphonic gothic metal band with folk elements from Norway and Germany.”

Female-fronted with male death accent vocals, viking themed

Symphony X

An “American progressive metal band founded in New Jersey.”

Male-fronted, FANTASTIC guitar work, and thought-provoking lyrics.

Epica

A Dutch opera-driven symphonic metal band.

Female-fronted, AWESOME is the only necessary word.

Kamelot

American power/symphonic metal with a Norwegian opera-trained vocalist.

Male-fronted, more power than symphonic, their album “Epica” was the inspiration for the above band's name and Simone has performed duets with Kamelot…just…FYI.

There's plenty more to suggest, but I'll start with these four. <3

My husband is into metal, so I've heard of all of those bands and have even listened to some of them. I have to be in the mood for metal though, so while I sometimes enjoy it, it's not on constant rotation.

One metal band that I always turn to, though, is Nightwish (their older stuff ONLY). Have you heard of them?

My husband is also into more of the doom metal bands, like My Dying Bride and whatnot. I think I prefer those because there is more of a classical feel, with violins, keyboards, etc. Since my preference lies in that direction, I also like bands like Tristania–their album Widow's Weeds is the best.

I LOVE Nightwish! I agree, the Tarja era was the ONLY era. She is a fantastic artist and perfectly delicious. ^_~ I love her solo album, too, but the composition is admittedly better on the Nightwish side of the tracks. Wishmaster is one of my fave albums of all time.

I love classical elements in metal, especially with the combined death and opera style vocals.  I like the “beauty and the beast” concept…however cliche it may be. Lol.

Apocalyptica is a really cool band because it consists of 3 cellos and a drummer. So classical instuments making metal AWESOMENESS! XD <3

Wishmaster is good, but I think that Oceanborn is my favorite.

Since you like the death/opera vocals, you really ought to check out Tristania. I think you'd really like them.

I have heard of Apocalyptica, but I've never HEARD them. ^_^ I'll have to check them out.
